SITUATION As municipalities and other stewards of green spaces look to revitalize outside areas, one of the most common investments is park benches. New park benches are available in cast concrete, but they are costly and don’t maintain the same nostalgic feel as traditional metal and wood slat benches.
The traditional wood and metal benches at a local park were old, ragged looking and the victims of repeated vandalisms. The state park service needed a solution to refurbish the benches without having to spend a great deal of money to replace them. They looked to LINE-X® to renovate the existing benches, refreshing their look and extending their life.

PROCEDURE
Ten benches were brought to the LINE-X location at a time. They were carefully disassembled and separated into metal and wooden parts for the purpose of spraying the two substrates in different colors. Any wood slats that were determined to be unsuitable were replaced.
The metal areas were aggressively abraded, primed with SF-515 and sprayed in green LINE-X. The wood slats were wiped clean with a dry cloth and sprayed in tan LINE-X. All the wood and metal pieces were completely encapsulated to a minimum of 60 mils, and all pieces were coated with color-coded LINE-X® XTRA to protect against the UV rays they are continually exposed to.
The benches were reassembled and picked up by the parks service for reinstallation in the park.
